Gabriella Cortese, the founder and designer of Antik Batik, is Italian by birth and Parisian by adoption. Her travels in Asia, specifically Bali and India, were the inspirations that led her to create Antik Batik in 1992. Gabriella describes Antik Batik as being a collection based on the "...fashion of a voyager who plunges into the past and rediscovers treasures in an old trunk, pieces that evoke childhood memories and the parties of the roaring twenties." Essentially the richly coloured universe of Antik Batik is an invitation to go back in time. Today Antik Batik has become an emblem of the French “Bourgeois-Boheme” or bohemian-chic lifestyle. The Antik Batik collections are sought after by celebrities and all women in search of authenticity. Antik Batik is known to be very rich as the Italian designer chooses the most noble of materials which are then printed or embroidered by hand. The label uses natural materials, mixed artistic influences, artisanal embroidery and printing to create the elegance of a “dandy” and traveling woman. Although, initially a label exclusive to women, Antik Batik expanded to include a children’s collection in 2001.
